Hereditary Retinoschisis

• It is estimated that this much less common form of retinoschisis affects one in 5,000 to 25,000 individuals, primarily young males. 
• X-linked recessive.
• The cystic, spoke-like foveal changes and loss of ERG b-wave are bilateral. 
• Various deleterious mutations in RS1 encoding for retinoschisin are implicated.
• In retinoschisis, the inner retina is split at the level of the nerve fiber layer, usually in the inferotemporal quadrant.
  

Degenerative Retinoschisis

• This type of retinoschisis is very common with a prevalence of up to 7% in normal individuals. 
• Its etiology is unknown. 
• Degenerative retinoschisis is not known to be a genetically inherited condition.
• There is always functional loss in the region of the schisis as there is a split in the outer plexiform layer resulting in a separation of the sensory retina from the ganglion layer.  

Tractional Retinoschisis

This may occur in: 

• Vitreomacular traction syndrome
• Proliferative diabetic retinopathy with vitreoretinal traction
